Devinia Binell - Aboriginal Health Educator / Liaison Officer
“At GPEx we’ve created a supportive environment in which Aboriginal people can share their experiences and non-Aboriginal people can ask questions to build their cultural awareness. I welcome these conversations.” Devinia is a descendant of the Barngarla people, the Wirangu people and the Kokatha people of the South Australian region. She has lived in many of South Australia’s highly populated Aboriginal communities across Whyalla, the Riverland, West Coast and metropolitan Adelaide. Devinia has led the growth of cultural awareness at GPEx and its efforts to close the gap. She leads GPEx’s cultural support program for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander registrars, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health, and provides cultural awareness training to all of our GP registrars and the broader GP sector. Devinia encourages Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal to feel comfortable having conversations that explore Aboriginal culture and history. She has an extensive background in governance for Aboriginal community organisations across education and health. This includes previous roles as Chair of the Ceduna Koonibba Health Service Aboriginal Corporation, and director of the Aboriginal Health Council of South Australia. Devinia had spent most of her previous years as an Aboriginal Health Practitioner in the delivery of ante-natal and childcare programs.
